AFN Yukon Regional Chief Kluane Adamek congratulates Vuntut Gwich’in Elder Lorraine Netro for receiving the Glen Davis Conservation Leadership Prize.

Whitehorse, Yukon – Congratulations to Vuntut Gwich’in Elder Lorraine Netro for receiving the prestigious Glen Davis Conservation Prize! The Prize honours individuals who are advocates for environmental protection and conservation and whose work has resulted in clear and tangible impacts.

Lorraine’s advocacy has revolved around the protection of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge for which she has been a champion against resource exploration for many years. She has fought to preserve the Wildlife Refuge and protect those species that call it home, including the Porcupine Caribou Herd which holds great significance for the Gwich’in people. The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is the sacred calving grounds of the Porcupine Caribou Herd as they migrate to the Alaskan coastal plains each year. Lorraine’s lifetime of conservation leadership includes her advocacy work as a Vuntut Gwich’in MLA, her participation on the Gwich’in Steering Committee, and her experience on the Alaska Wilderness League. She also joins Regional Chief Adamek on the AFN’s Advisory Committee on Climate Action and the Environment.

Regional Chief Kluane Adamek shared her congratulations by saying, “Lorraine fully embodies the idea of leading from a place of values. As First Nations people, we understand the importance of protecting and preserving nature and wildlife because of its inherent value, and Lorraine’s work is paving the way for a better future for Mother Earth and for future generations,” she says. “It is so important for Elders and knowledge keepers to be recognized for their contributions. I continue to hold up Lorraine and all of the Elders who have fought to create a better world for the generations to come.”
